basically an artifact of a generation or so having grown into photography while 135 film had near-total market hegemony. An impossible delusion to hold for anyone who had much experience with medium or large format film. It doesn't make a lick of sense in the digital context either, but for a while there APS-C was close enough to 135 and it was so common to label point and shoots with their 35mm equivalent focal length, that a lot of folks were very confused
