Given the way people talked it up, I was not expecting to be quite as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow as it is. I'm not a CG hater, but the stadium does not feel visually like a real space, and there's something about the way it doesn't do that which really does give me a hit of Sky Captain vibes. I'm not sure whether it's the shadows being not quite right or the perspective being not quite right, or what.
Anyway, it's certainly still...interesting. Particularly interesting is what they don't do with it. There's no foliage in the scene, so no wood effect, and they went out of their way to avoid another standard hallmark of infrared, which is a darkened sky. And a lot of the more subtle effects are nonstarters since there's no visible light frame of reference for most of what we're seeing. So, they were really only interested in what infrared does to skin and eyes.
