I published my second zine today! It's a one-page fanzine about the ending of Outer Wilds. (There are minor spoilers for names of people and items in the "Credits" section of the project page, and major spoilers in the zine itself, obviously.)
I'm really pleased with it. I didn't write the words (they're in-game dialogue), and much of the art is edited or traced graphics from the game, but that's okay! Approaching visual art as part of a larger whole (like a zine) is something I don't think I've done before, and it helped me let go of the perfectionism that holds me back when creating standalone pieces. Instead of worrying that tracing or editing graphics isn't "art," or telling myself that I'm not good at drawing, I could just enjoy being creative while choosing images, recreating them in Illustrator, and working on the design. Remixing and combining things was fun, and I even made a couple graphics from scratch!
I also got a little more up to speed on PDF accessibility, which is a little different than web accessibility. The file meant for reading (not printing) has alt text and PDF tagging, so it should be accessible to screen reader users, and it's mostly in black and white so the contrast is pretty good. (EDIT: although maybe I should check the contrast of that grey watercolor streak...)
I'm planning on editing my first zine to be more accessible, too, although I think it will prove to be a little more challenging, looking at the structure. (How does one tag a contents page that's part computer text, part images of handwritten text...?) But hey, it's good practice! ๐
