i am in a weird nexus of "not surprised" and "surprised" with this cuz on one hand post Blazing and tipping and double-triple-quad checkmarks or whatever was like... ok Tumblr is carving out its niche and making stuff work for itself within its scope

but also it trying to corporatize smol bean posting and changing the dashboard to look like twitter and shove Live™ content in your face was like... idk. very clear floundering.

sucks. i'm surprised, i'm not surprised, mostly i'm sad because it seems like automattic were/are actually pretty good to them and tumblr probably wouldn't have had a chance to do anything new under different/more vulturous ownership

I truly hope the "Blaze" feature gets co-opted by other sites (maybe even THIS ONE RIGHT HERE) 'cuz community-sourced advertising rules and being able to blaze OTHER people's posts was a stroke of comedic genius.

when the CEO mocked critics of tumblr live on his tumblr live stream with "but how would we do this very video without tumblr live", he lost all credibility to me. like I get it, you want your investment in a former dating site that failed so hard they tried pivoting to white labeling their tech to make sense, but please don't pretend that all the video sites that have existed for decades don't exist and you couldn't possibly have ever used them before, or since.
