I haven't used Android in a few years now but Poweramp used to be pretty good and looks like it's still getting updated, 15 day free trial and $5 purchase, on the free side foobar2000 has an Android port that seems to be well regarded.

I use Musicolet, which is a free, extremely no-nonsense music player. It has shuffle, it has playlists, it has sorting, it has zero online capability, so for it to play music the music has to be on your phone in a folder somewhere. Depending on your perspective that last feature is either annoying or a huge selling point.

The PlexAmp music player is worth paying Plex their subscription fee for, IMO. I keep my music library on my PC and stream it to my phone. The interface is simple but has all the features I want (like rating tracks I listen to and easy playlist creation). For me, the best parts of streaming (don't have to sync stuff to my phone, but can cache albums/playlists if you're going to an area without internet) and having my own library (it has what I want and tracks won't randomly disappear when Spotify loses the license).
