I think Kite really does mean that much to Gon (another reason why the 2011 anime's change there sucks), plus now Gon has a strong enough grasp of Nen to do this sort of dangerous bargain.

My read has always been that it has less to do with Kite - as much as he is Gon's literal definition of a hunter - and more to do with Gon's feelings about himself. Up until the breakdown, Gon would have done the exact same thing for any friend. What’s different this time is that Gon feels responsible. It’s not the loss of Kite that pushes him over the edge, it’s the fact that he feels like it wouldn’t have happened if he wasn’t there, he was powerless to stop it, and has no tools to deal with that fact. Normally he deals with tough situations by persevering, but this time he was helpless and his boundless optimism wasn’t enough. If you can’t see things ever getting better from this point, why not trade away your entire future? It’s as much self-flagellation as it is revenge.
