I'm very fascinated by the oft-repeated factoid that a lot of American families had a lot of extra money to spend during 2020-2021 because the pandemic prevented them from taking their usual vacations, trips, theme parks, etc.

Maybe it's just because I'm not a vacation guy and I super underestimate how often people travel, but like........people had thousands of extra dollars laying around BECAUSE of the pandemic??

They didn't even burn through the savings to bulk up on cleaning supplies, home office setup, home gym equipment, any of that??

I mean obviously the unspoken caveat to that factoid is "upper-middle class Americans" or "Americans who can comfortably work from home" but still...how much yearly income is going towards vacations??? Maybe I'm just too much of an indoor kid. Are people taking like 2 vacations a year every year?

i'm not american or upper middle class, but we take a week or two of vacation every summer with friends, which costs around 150 to 200€ per person + travel, and then vacation with family in winter, which usually is just a week and costs a bit less.

i'm not surprised that people with decent salaries go on vacation, but i'm surprised at why it would cost several thousands of dollars to go on vacation. is there nothing to do in the US ?
