note: interestingly, all the airports had exactly 3 types of floor coverings (edit: that i saw)

number 3: seattle

boring offwhite terrazzo flooring
uninspired. boring. 0 effort was put into this. reminds me of goverment buildings. also seen were boring dark blue carpet and one more i dont remember. because it was not memorable. (edit: i have remembered. it was vinyl fake wood. awful.) embarrassed to live in the city with this as an airport.

number 2: portland

carpet with green background and colorful pattern
the pattern is evoking ancient elementary school memories of using a protractor and i am a fan of protractors. also i love the primary colors!! simple but hugely effective. HOWEVER the overall ranking is impaired by the fact that there are patches of the carpet that are slightly different (pictured), and also that the first carpet you see after getting off the plane is this one:
same carpet as before but in a different color palette of only green and blue
which is just a worse version of the other one. this was not necessary. when youre just walking the blue lines stick out in your peripheral vision and feel messy. shouldve just stuck with the primary colors.
(third flooring was just dark blue carpet, used as a buffer between the other two carpets.)

and coming in at number 1: Albuquerque (capitalized because i had to use autocorrect to spell it)

colorful carpet in a hispanic pattern next to stone tiles
theres culture here!!!! holy crap!!! and unlike the other two airports these carpets were PRISTINE. new mexico is clearly very proud of this airport and takes good care of it. and the tile is a great contrast. easy to clean and much more aesthetically pleasing than seattles terrazzo.
(i could swear there was a third flooring but i cant remember. there were a few varieties of the tiling though so that counts)

it really is! tho honestly my favorite thing about it will always be the simple fact that it is brown instead of grey. the sheer relief of getting off the plane and walking into an airport that’s not grey after several that are cannot be understated.

I grew up in Jacksonville and I was in love with the terrazo floor art in the main lobby. When they renovated, the extended the floor style through the whole airport, but without the metal bands separating the shapes it felt a lot messier. Terrazo floor with a giant turtle and manatee
