well you see.
in early kirby games, they were both rivals to kirby. Also, they knew eachother in some capacity, since Dedede trusted Meta Knight with a peice of the star rod in Nightmare in Dreamland.
Later, meta knight tries to overthrow dedede (as one does)
but after that, they both gradually became less antagonistic to kirby, and even allies sometimes.
In kirby's return to dreamland, they team up with him (also it's my favorite game).
I'm not sure they interact much (or at all) in triple deluxe or robobot.
but in star allies, they are distinctly friends of Kirby, and not bad guys. Its noted to be unusual that they are acting evil. (they're under the influnce of dark magic)

If you know anything on this subject, you are well aware of kirby fighters 2.
Quick list of. lets say. moments in this game.
-inciting incident: kirby is invited to a tower that dedede and meta knight built. its a rival test thingy
-meta knight and king dedede are always fighting as a pair in this game
-they hold hands in the ending.
But most of all, they are referred to as SWORN PARTNERS during the entire game.

kirby and the forgotten land, meta knight searches the whole continent for kirby and king dedede before returning to protect waddle dee town
so yeah in conclusion they are stupid and gay and in love
