Long time no see! I haven't done show notes on Coffee & Comic Books for a little while because it's a ton of work, but I do think it makes the show better so I am back at it haha. If you're not familiar with Coffee & Comic Books, it's a podcast on the Export Audio network. My friend Rick and I do a book club for comics and cover everything from weird 70s French comics to weird 70s American comics to weird 00s manga. We like weird stuff, and there are few comics weirder than Taiyō Matsumoto's No. 5. Okay I've written the word weird enough now.
Three weeks ago, we put out our first episode on No. 5, which you can listen to in the free feed or for free on the Export patreon. And as this post goes live, I just put out our episode about volumes 3 and 4 exclusively for our $5 patrons! Our next episode will be about Walt Simonson's Orion and that will be a free episode.
That's it for the promo, but if you hit the read more, you'll see a list of all the other comics that get mentioned in these two episodes and a ton of cool images from them, so enjoy!
-
Rub the Blood, an Art Comix tabloid that explores the lasting influence (for better or worse) of the Early 90’s Collector Boom comics of Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, etc. on today’s most fringe underground cartoonists.

-
Infinite Bowman by Pat Aulisio, a psychedelic character study of David Bowman from 2001 a space oddyssey.

-
Some other comics by Taiyō Matsumoto: Ping Pong, Tekkonkinkreet, and Cats at the Louvre

-
Comics that are big influences on No. 5: Cyborg 009, The Airtight Garage, and Watchmen (also coincidentally three comics that we talk about frequently on C&CB, in fact you can listen to our episode on Le Garage Hermétique if you're a $5 patron).

-
The Woman Trap by Bilal

-
Rick has been uploading issues of Animage on his patreon for free and they're so cool! Check it out!

-
Hellboy in Mexico, a series of Hellboy short stories that fucking owns.

-
A couple Brandon Sanderson comics that I have not read and will not vouch for despite being a huge fan of his novels lol: White Sand & Dark One

-
Orion by Masamune Shirow

-
The Repairmen by Moebius, which you can find in Epic Graphic Novels that are very out of print and very... available online if you catch my drift.
