Hi artist cohost! I need a bit of advice. Can anyone tell me what's a good drawing tablet to get? Is it better if it has a screen or not? What kind of connection it uses (USB/HDMI, what's required, which is better)? What size is the best, and/or what resolution? Any tips about styluses? I welcome advice about models fit for an adequate visual artist who hasn't really used a tablet much. Thank you in advance!

the one thing i've found is that 'powered' styluses like apple pencil, etc. are annoying. they don't work as just a regular stylus when the batteries are dead, you have to use them charged. thus i deeply prefer non-powered ones. (this might be different if you use a fancy drawing tablet though? outside my experience sorry)

I'm not an artist in any capacity, but I have a HUION Kamvas 13 and it's pretty neat. All I've ever done is draw diagrams with it or open Figma on it though, and I mostly use it as a portable second monitor. It's got a nice display and has pretty good colours I think. If your laptop supports USB-C DisplayPort then it only needs one cable but they include a slightly bulkier adapter cable that splits into HDMI and USB if you don't. The stylus doesn't have a battery you can just use it whenever which is also pretty neat.

I quite like XP-Pen's tablets and have had very few issues with them. As for whether you would want a screen or screenless one, I think that's more to personal taste; I've used both before and I generally prefer screens but I know some artists who swear by screenless. One thing to keep in mind is that screen tablets can sometimes be more expensive depending on brand and model, so if you're just trying them out you might want to see if you can get a cheap screenless one or get something second hand, you shouldn't feel like you need to break the bank to test the waters with them. I know that's not like, model specific, but I hope that helps!
