we live in a ceaseless hell from which the only escape is a degree of mutual collaboration that seems ever more unimaginable
the thing that bothers me the most is, early on, there were signs we MIGHT actually do so.
and then... fuck.
it's really depressing watching people who are hard left and even activist just concede here.
it feels like a no brainer; minor inconveniences (relative) to the individual which yield outsized benefit to society are obvious wins we should all be down with. it's the pay for social services argument, it's the single payer healthcare argument, it's the public infrastructure and transit argument. so why the fuck are you going to the grocery store without a mask on and risking others? long covid fucking sucks. most people don't have a choice about needing to get groceries, there's no real opt out there for a lot of people.
No one in my city masks anymore but my household... People look at us weird... We dont understand
I work in public health and at one meeting we had in 2020 some asked why I looked so glum. It was because I had realized we had all the tools we'd need to beat this, but we refused to use them, and humanity as a whole had disappointed me profoundly and fundamentally.
