The day I am, as of right now, deeming Data Integrity Day.

Why 5/20? 520 byte sectors. Which ironically are kind of useless now, but what other number are you going to pick as a snappy, memorable number for Data Integrity? "3-2-1 like the backups"? No, that's backups, not Data Integrity. Backups are what you need when your Data Integrity isn't. Bit rot, silent corruption, and COSMIC RAYS HERE TO RUIN YOUR DAY are all very real. And chkdsk, that loves ruining data too.

Anyway go use ZFS or something. Run a scrub. Turn pAtRoL rEaDs on or whatever if you're still living that life.

i would scrub my pools more often if it didnt cause the entire system to just lock up and hang. i should probably figure out why that happens thats probably going to bite me in the ass at some point

That, should not happen! *nix can lock up pretty hard if the disk under it isn't responding but ZFS should still be functional during scrubs and even resilvers.

Linux MD scans on the other hand, those hit kind of hard from what I recall. Those stunk.
