by the way, if you were thinking that exporting all of your telegram data was a good idea (you can do it from the telegram desktop app and it spits it out into an html browsable folder), it takes a LOT of time if you include files with it. Like, run it overnight kinda stuff. Just a heads up.

So it turns out if your account is old enough and you choose to export any media as well (images, stickers, etc), there's a good chance the exporter will just get hung on an old file it can't download and wait for you to manually skip it. So basically this needs to be babysat.

Which makes it go from "run overnight" to "this week's project"

EDIT: If you only want "my chats in case telegram gets nuked", I would suggest exporting as follows:

Account Information
Contacts List
Personal Chats
Miscellaneous data
Human readable HTML

This should actually export on it's own without babysitting in an hour or two.

in reply to @plumpan's post:

It should work easy if you just disable ALL media except for like, profile pictures or whatever, which should be good enough to get a list of "people I've messaged in case I suddenly lose access to telegram"

i ran into that problem a couple nights ago! it was getting hung up on the occasional sticker that no longer exists. the whole thing started to slow down too over the 700,000 posts - like the first 300k downloaded pretty fast but then the rest took increasingly long as it crawled over the end, and it had me staying up alot later than i'd expected.

at least you can export it though. i've been paranoid about accidentally deleting a chat after almost fumbling my way into it when waking up a couple times. it's only 3 taps away... wonder if they make it so easy to appease the fantasies of the app's target demographics

Yup stickers and 6+ year old files are what seems to hang it up.

I'm glad there's the export option for sure. A reasonably decent one all things considered, given how many hoops I assume it'd be to get the same data from Discord or the likes.
