@Zoeysecho asked:

What is the general process of being apart of the crew of a Mothership?

hmm, they're mobile cities, so the broadest sense of crew spans all walks of life! the ship also sort of runs itself to a large degree, and theoretically it could run without an operator. but some hundreds of upkeep and logistics crew have a role to play helping out the shipboard ecology, monitoring for tricky problems and long term issues, and keeping the overall homeostasis of the ship in line with the government's goals, with cadres going around patching up frayed wires or running projections on the air mixture ratios or talking to plants and so on. the much smaller flight operations crew is more personally managed by the queen as they have large-scale override over critical systems in case of certain maneuvers.

Mothership denizens are networked together by a sort of magic collective unconscious that helps organize their political system, i haven't thought it out altogether but perhaps it's lightly comparable to the Conjoiner collective mind in the Revelation Space series. everyone kind of literally is friends with each other even with a population of like 100k. Tanukis are often part of the occult engineering staff that maintains the dream-net because they are naturally adept with telepathy. it also helps the coronation of new queens and other major figures. this is how modern dragons come about: when the Will Of The People converges in the election of a kobold to queenhood they transform into a dragon. so if you run into a dragon on the street you may very well be in the presence of a past queen. the will of the people commonly converges in other ways too, often happening to particularly popular figures or those who embody a certain zeitgeist.

Motherships travel in constellations, flotillas of several ships each governed by a Queen while a High Queen leads the constellation at large. different constellations observe varying degrees of nomadism. some queens attach themselves to a larger sedentary region in the long term, providing the services of a mobile industrial base, logistics centers, or military garrison to more lightly industrialized sectors. others run a lighter urban infrastructure aboard ship to serve as "traders" hauling cargo and passengers between higher traffic worlds, but in such a way as to retain their distinct political identity. Safira's constellation is more of a fully nomadic one, wandering the galaxy on their own terms.

the inside of a Mothership is frequently relatively tight packed as large space habitats go. the artificial gravity cylinders enclose concentric rings inside them, matryoshka style, for full utilization of available living space. this gives it a cavern city vibe, appropriate as a dragon lair in space perhaps ^^ though also brightly lit. soft tapestries and cushions are common in the street, tapestries and mesh nets being not only decoration but ways of climbing around in the low gravity. and peoples' clothes are often very scanty or made to show themselves off, of course ✨
