And it reads "Whenever you see someone post a bad take about defining games or gameplay, you enter rant mode for the next 90 minutes."

"Just saw someone say good games can have bad gameplay" yeah and I've seen people say all JRPGs, Visual Novels and Gone Home don't have good game play, so define your terms bucko or stop making ubiquitous-sounding statements that are just cover for the comment "bad games are games I don't like."

This drives me up a wall, because like. What is "bad gameplay?" Is bad gameplay anything that isn't fun, doesn't control well, doesn't feel good? But some of the best most memorable gameplay I've ever encountered is miserable.

On one hand I agree with all this on a primal level and on the other hand I'm a huge stan of Jurassic Park: Trespasser and feel like I can fairly say 'this game whips ass and it's gameplay sucks ass" so I guess my point here is if you're gonna love a game with "bad gameplay" at least go for the deep cut. 🙃

Honestly, at the end of the day, I don't think "Good" or "Bad" gameplay exist - there are only games we enjoy and games we don't, and anyone insisting otherwise has a hot take on specific genre, mechanic or style of play. Games are only as good as the joy they bring to individuals and gosh Trespasser sounds like something is love to Watch but not Play, and that's not just okay that's actively good.

(Granted, my opinion extends to all forms of art - I love poorly acted but earnest local theater; I will forever love Jupiter Ascending both for what it meant to me as a reward for submitting my first paper to an academic journal, but also where I was in my transition when it came out - I also just think it's a super fun popcorn flick; I am glad I read all of Homestuck but I never will again; etc.)

I've always been of the opinion it's okay to like "bad" games. Especially to say that you like something that is considered to be a bad game. I have no idea why people get so adamant about it. Like everything that's good must be liked, but if it's flawed it's undeserving of even the smallest bit of praise. I also may have some bias as a connoisseur of "bad" games. lol

it's also always a delight when i find a "you have to grind" complaint about a game that someone has soloed as a level 1 chicken equipped with Ame-no-Hasuckiri, the sword that fails to attack and insults your family 1/4th of the time you use the fight command with it

World’s End Club is this for me, the puzzle-platforming was awful but I’m ride or die for Kotaro Uchikoshi’s work and was very charmed by the story and characters. Pretty good soundtrack too. Also, hard agree about Gone Home.
