i'm at the point where i'm looking to see how much it costs for custom resistor networks with a strange configuration,,,,
What configuration? If it's low-value and you only need one or two, I've had good luck making them by hand from thin stainless wire.
I need them to be small smd parts in a termination configuration, like this:

Ideally in a package that lets me route a trace thru the connection points between the resistors.
Oooooh, yeah, that wouldn't be easy or fun to precisely DIY from wire. Maybe a dedicated PCB with castellations so it can be soldered edge-down, carrying some precision resistors? It would take as much board area as a SMD component, just more vertical space.
