so i have a modern gaming PC, and because a friend built it and i bought it off of him, it has a bunch of RGB stuff! so i have over 300 RGB-LEDs with 3 colors each in my PC. personally i don't really care about it, as long as it's not chaotic rainbow puke. you can sync your LEDs on most drivers, but the thing is: i have RGB stuff from razer, bloody, roccat, corsair, gigabyte, gigabyte (but uses another driver because its a mainboard), gigabyte again (the fucking RGB ram that is really annoying to control), XPG, and NZXT. and each one of those has its own driver. i am not fucking installing 9 drivers for some LEDs. and the cherry on top: the NZXT one makes my PC crash about once a day and there is no fix for that.

the solution for that is OpenRGB. it's a fucking awesome tool that lets you control basically any rgb device (except for my mice & the stupid fucking RGB ram). but: if you want to map out all of your LEDs into a 2d space, you need to a) install a plugin with weird UX and b) map each LED by hand.

here's my idea:

  • you plug a camera into your PC, position that where you usually sit and point it to your PC
  • the program turns every LED off
  • now it loops through each LED, flashes it on/off a few times and determines the position with the camera
  • (optionally) it flashes the red, green and blue LED to do color correction
  • and now you have a full map of your LEDs and can do stuff like a wave animation without it being complete chaos!

i might build that at some point but i have a bunch of other stuff to do rn. so if anyone here finds that useful, feel free to steal the idea!
