minecraft shaders are cool, but they do tend to break a bit. a post about the beauty of bugs in shaders making a block game over-realistic

note: the videos are broken on ms edge, ie and safari, and i have not found a fix that involves 200mb GIFs yet lol

minecraft shaders. they really like breaking. there are three common shader loaders (the built-in, optifine and sodium/iris) and hoo boy are there a lot of minecraft versions, so 100% compatibility is pretty much impossible. i play wynncraft on 1.12.2 right now, and the compatibility here is okay, but a few shaders dislike me, so i picked a few niche shaders and just tossed them into MC.

for example, here's KappaPT 15 on OptiFine 1.12.2 HD_U_G5:

a gray image, with something that kind of resembles a wing in black. everything has a lot of bloom

i have no clue what is happening but it sure does look strange. even weirder, if i turn the debug view on and off again, this happens:

(oh and by the way, that is not a gif, that is an AVIFS file. for some reason this gets handled as an image, so i use that for videos lol)

and then i just accepted that it wont work, and tried the next one in my shaders.

so i loaded MollyVX 5.6 and a message popped up:

i just ignored that and clicked yes. then it started loading the shader. and it loaded. and loaded. eventually it dawned on me.

voldemort meme. "should not have clicked that. i should not have clicked that"

i then checked the logs, and to my surprise, it more or less just said nothing.

on one hand, i am really curious what happened there. should that not just. crash? why does it freeze and just say nothing? on the other hand i will not debug any java code that i have not written myself.

NostalgiaVX was really disappointing. instead of anything cool i just got this:

everything is black. wow.

OctrayRewrite on the other hand is a lot better. it makes everything black, but the sky is blood red:

however it has the slight caveat that if you go out of F1 you get flashes sometimes that look like this:

then i tried SoftVoxels P2 and P4 and they also gave me the nostalgia treatment. :(

the last one isnt a bug but intentional: Sildurs Vibrant Extreme+VL has an option to just turn all blocks white. and it looks stunning

anyways i might try a few other shaders on other versions tomorrow but now i just want to chill a bit on wynncraft lol
