troublesome fox girl

hello i like to make video games and stuff and also have a good time on the computer. look @ my pinned for some of the video games and things. sometimes i am horny on @squishfox

absolutely can't wait for this. it's so fucking stupid but i love that they made a bunch of random animations that work with any arbitrary emote. you can't even pick which animation you get (afaict) so it's just a "Do Something" button. which i have to admit is kind of fun in a way i wish software were fun more often

you only get it with nitro, you only get to do it 5 times a week (though that seems to roll over), and anyone can turn them off on their end. so discord is letting you pay to be mildly obnoxious and also letting everyone opt out of it for free, which is kind of genius. like jingling keys in front of a baby

UPDATE: OH NO THE ANIMATION IS CHOSEN CLIENT-SIDE. IT DOESN'T EVEN NECESSARILY PERSIST CLIENT-SIDE. SO EVERYONE SEES SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!! THAT SUCKS

in reply to @lexyeevee's post:

wait i can turn them off? i must’ve missed that option

(was kinda irate that it’s yet another on-by-default animation when i have reduce motion turned on so it would have been very easy for me to miss it)

Yes you totally can!! You can also disable them for your server IIRC—at least, that’s one of the pieces of feedback that was given on behalf of the DisAbilities ERG + the Accessibility team.

Also please tell me if you’ve got more feedback!!

i think the fact that they still animate on hover, but the animation is randomly-selected client-side and plays in a much larger container, and is therefore unpredictable, is a bit worrysome. because if i happen to leave my cursor in that little box and look somewhere else that can potentially trigger motion sickness in me because of how big/unexpected the motion is. (but i'm honestly unsure whether this worry is based on anything real or if i'm just being a curmudgeon; the target area for triggering an animation is super small and pretty damn obvious.)

for reference i am using PTB 178934 (e605f59) in case something relevant is different there from live

i think rigging them to not activate on hover if the mouse didn't actually move (i.e. the emote moved to become under the cursor) would be good

also i can't believe the animation is chosen client-side?? that is heartbreaking. how can we bond over serendipitous combinations of emote and animation if we all see something different

the first time one sprung on me i couldn't find any way to turn the animations off entirely (which really should've respected the browser's reduce-motion setting to begin with) short of trying to make adblock rules, which I'm sure will eventually either become untenable or end up getting me banned from the service or some shit. i left some grumpy feedback on a google form.

if all the disabilities erg was able to achieve was to give disabled discord users the exciting quest of having to beg every guild they're in (and possibly argue with Nitro users feeling entitled to use the bullshit they're paying for - but it's fine, disabled people are known for having lots of energy for this right) to turn off a feature they should've been able to block on their own client, it paints a somewhat dire picture of how much this can be improved at all

You can disable it by turning on Discord's reduce motion setting--and while I agree that should respect browser-based rules, often development is client first, browser second. I can absolutely pass that feedback along too. Turning on reduce motion will still play animations on mouse over, but as long as you avoid mouse over you won't see these.

Guild owners were an important part of the puzzle because many server owners are in fact disabled themselves.

An awful lot of what discord does is "like jingling keys in front of a baby" I reckon

But this post directed me to the accessibility menu, WHICH HAS AN OPTION FOR THE OLD CHAT INPUT BOX! THANK YOU! The new one is absolutely terrible (along with basically any other chat text input that attempts to format as you type, discord is far from the only offender here) and I am very happy to turn that shit off.

E: Maybe this should have been a reply to the other comment, whatever. Too lazy to move it.

As a heads' up on this, know that slash command suggestions won't appear in the legacy chat input, and slash commands in general can have some Issues when using legacy. If you're attempting to use a bot with slash commands and are having issues, try swapping back to non-Legacy temporarily.

Total non issue for me, I dislike bots and the only slash command I use is /me which acted weird with the new input anyway.

Legacy is 100% better for me.

Actually now that I think about it, every bot I've ever interacted with has either been via emoji reactions, or involuntarily. "Plum has reached level 2!" nonsense. I don't think I have ever needed or wanted to interact with a discord bot via slash.

I think my favourite thing about these is they don’t display any differently on mobile but it will chastise you (if you’re not paid up) for attempting to super react if you click on an otherwise indistinguishable from normal emoji reaction 🙈

for me they have a background that matches the emote, rather than just being Darker Gray

otoh i have no idea how i'm supposed to replay the animation on mobile which takes some of the fun out of it

I honestly wish as a server operator that I could disable them entirely in my server, but the only way to do that is just to disable all reactions

the only thing I can do is take people's super reacts off messages, which is ok, because I've been told that apparently the person super reacting can't undo it? despite the instructions saying they can? idk I don't have nitro

anyways I just feel like the whole super reaction thing takes away from whatever it's reacting to, and like, if someone super reacts to an artwork I did that's actually gonna get me pretty peeved because it's like bro, I spent a good chunk of time on this and now you got Swirling Shit on it. Everyone's looking at your Swirling Shit instead of my artwork
