i very seldom hear anyone say IM or IMing or similar, but in ye olde days that was a whole thing with AIM, MSN, etc
and multiple comments were asking what an IM is
which, i mean, reasonable i guess — we are long beyond the point where "instant" is impressive
i think it's just the instant part became ubiquitous -- I've been calling them 'messaging apps' for at least 7 years
do the kids these days say "pm" for private message or is that one a little too old/middle-age? maybe only the kids on minecraft or MMOs but not instagram?
