oh no it was always about like... celebrities, from the range of Actual Celebrities to internet microcelebs. it was very very messy
It's like we snuck the concept of sin back into secular morality
it's also a word that can ambiguously indicate anything from "remember no one is perfect and we all have some problems" to "TOXIC, DO NOT INTERACT"
I was playing FFXIV and I caught a fish called "problematicus" (apparently in-universe there was a huge argument over whether it was real) and I couldn't stop thinking about the idea of writing a callout post for it
I feel like that kind of calloit culture has poisoned the well really
it's incredibly frustrating that academic terminology meant to point to texts being contradictory and self-subverting rather than a totalizing statement on the Universal Human Condition or whatever got so completely flanderized by tumblr into "thing I don't like".
