why is every tech startup so openly manipulative!!
i just
i REALLY hate being openly manipulated and no one batting an eye
this is transparently "we'll simply hold everyone's posts hostage to get more signups"
and it just sucks
hello i like to make video games and stuff and also have a good time on the computer. look @ my pinned for some of the video games and things. sometimes i am horny on @squishfox

I found it incredibly hilarious to discover this after the big deal everyone made about Twitter doing this.
+1, that's exactly what the invite system and the resulting twitter fervor made it feel like
yeah it's super annoying how many people on indieweb chat are constantly posting bluesky links, completely anathema to the ethos of indieweb. it's a big part of why I haven't really been participating there lately.
my reaction to this sort of thing is "oh cool i'll just never use that" but i guess other people react differently
it's even worse: the api is open so if you know what you're doing you can look at any post you want (there's even a bluesky firehose website that just posts everything as its posted)
finding it increasingly hilarious (in a most painful way) that every mainstream social media has some wrapper site that lets you get around the bullshit, like fxtwitter for twitter embeds, nitter for browsing twitter sanely without an account, and psky for bluesky embeds. just real great what we've done to the web
between that and "download the app to do arbitrary thing X you could do yesterday" popups on top of reasonably functional mobile web apps, i would like to delete the internet please
bonus points when the app is literally the same shit in a webview
Points to tumblr forcing me to select "waahh I don't wanna" whener I reject to use the app
it especially sucks when a critical mass of sites do it because it'll just normalize and then everyone under 20 or w/e will just know the internet as "that app where you can't see anything unless you're logged in"
am i remembering it wrong or aren't they still invite-only too?
i mean it's still openly manipulative but they don't seem to be even harvesting sign-ups, just waitlist joins.
(edited)
they don't know wtf they're doing either.
the most benign explanation i've heard is the people who run the joint really want to get federation working so they can offload labor intensive task like moderation to the plebs.
the whole thing is supposed to be designed to decompose different aspects of providing social media (like moderation) into services you can pick from a vendor.
however the only entity that can actually do moderation right now is bluesky. even after the blowback of not dealing with really simple to fix racist garbage, they're still trying to depend on automated systems to provide t&s
anyway, letting people in any faster would overwhelm their purposefully inadequate facilities
Oh so thats what the meant when they said they looked at ActivityPub and realized it was "missing functionality they needed"
this same thing was exactly what made me strongly opposed to tumblr out of spite, and that site has more actual appeal than jack dorsey's racism dial
if i'm not doing it for a place i might actually want to exist on, why the fuck would i do it for twitter 2: this time more racist
