Hey there! This might be a bit a personal question, so no worries if you don't want to answer it, but do you have any suggestions or just general thoughts about transitioning out of the corporate tech world? I know you did it awhile ago at this point, but all this AI nonsense has pushed me over the edge and I'm prepping to get out now. The prospect is a bit scary though since corpo tech work is so comfortable income and benefit-wise that it's still a bit of a mental hurdle for me to get past. Thanks for any insights you might have!

unfortunately nooooot really,

it worked out okay for me because i just tend not to... buy things, very much, so the tech paychecks kind of piled up into a tiny hoard of (now dwindling) dragon gold, which has been stretched out because i still tend not to buy things very much. like health insurance. who needs that anyway

i didn't have a strong plan but i was surprised by how much support i got for the tech blogging. but then i stopped tech blogging and i'm still trying to get the whole video games thing going

i guess you don't have to go indie though. i can't really speak to specifics, but i've heard enough people mention over the years that there are tech jobs outside of the hype circle. lots of people need computer wizardry done at varying levels. smaller businesses and nonprofits and universities and hospitals need IT and websites and simple automation and whatnot; less glamorous fields like healthcare and finance need specific software that is mostly done by rinky-dink shops using a stack from ten years ago. i mean my first job was writing property tax software in perl, and it paid a decent salary. not six digits, but way more than enough for one person sharing a house

definitely stash whatever cash you can ahead of time though

idk this doesn't feel very helpful!! but good luck escaping

i am pretty sure i actually can't escape. i utilize my health insurance to the maximum extent as a matter of course, at minimum, when nothing is going wrong. so i need health insurance with a low out of pocket maximum + premium total, which generally means either nice company insurance or something that requires maintaining a state of perpetual poverty to qualify for as far as i'm aware. and expatriating without having an in demand career also looks a lot harder, so i'm not sure how much of an option that is for finding somewhere to live that doesn't completely rule out getting healthcare with modest means.

i also live with a background level of dread that one or both of these openings will close before i have an opportunity to get to a better place. just trying to stack cash in a hostile environment without getting completely soul crushed for now... not sure how well that's gonna last the way things have been going
