troublesome fox girl

hello i like to make video games and stuff and also have a good time on the computer. look @ my pinned for some of the video games and things. sometimes i am horny on @squishfox

personally i think it fucking sucks that i tried to be upfront about several difficulties i have that often make alt text nontrivial (but i do my best to write it anyway), and multiple hashtag disability justice people gave commentary that boils down to "have you tried not being so lazy"

i never expect anyone to care when something is hard for me and this is exactly why. even people who pride themselves on how much they care about accessibility will still readily fall back on, essentially, "well it's easy for me so why can't you just do it? just do it"

maybe next you could tell me that i need to try applying myself, or i'm not living up to my potential. that'll help

yeah absolutely, like

  1. what details are important to the point of the image
  2. what details do other people want to see?
  3. how many details are too many details
  4. usually when I'm writing a big-ass post I'm in significant amounts of pain from having done all of the big-ass post writing and now I'm being asked to do more typing
  5. sufficient accessibility text isn't actually supposed to go into the image alt text anyway, image descriptions need to be provided in a way that are actually accessible to the real user agents being used by real people, and that usually means providing a transcript or something, alt text is absolutely not meant to include multiple paragraphs and can't include additional formatting that screen readers can theoretically use for emphasis etc.

Automatic image descriptions and OCR and so on would be such a great use of AI. Too bad that's all been taken over by shitty people who just want to make a quick buck by making shitty procgen "art."

yeah exactly this sort of thing. it's a highly ambiguous social task, and often i draw until i'm exhausted so that's where i'm at when i'm posting it, and sometimes i don't have verbal energy at all, and

Yeah and especially in the case of purely visual art, like, how does the alt text actually help anyone who can’t see it to appreciate it? Like okay you’re giving someone the idea of what it’s about but like

People don’t ask musicians to provide alt text for instrumental works

I personally do my best to write alt text that captures the feeling of the image if I'm posting e.g., a photo I took that conveys emotion, but it's not at all straightforward or easy. I have described it as "translating a photo into a poem".

Also you're spot-on—providing an accessible description of a piece of music for the blind would be similarly difficult.

100%

Peeps get tunnel-vision about who accessibility is for, and fail to see more accessible alternatives. Its a thing I've noticed while pushing for better accessibility in games too.

People think accessibility is only for those with sensory problems (weak or lost senses, not sensitivities), motor disabilities, and MAYBE epileptics - and totally ignore or are outright apathetic towards people with attention, emotional, motivational, or even processing struggles.

Hot take. Short, helpful, and easy to follow tutorial/help directories that you can access at any time without having to go from start to finish are a major accessibility feature.
My memory is shit, and the amount of times I've forgotten a major gameplay mechanic, and had to quit and play through 16 minutes of a 20 minute tutorial just to work it out is immeasurable.
Double so if the tutorial is one of those where it's just a text box that vanishes if you don't figure it out in time. Slow reader? Accidentally did it once but don't know how you did it? Sucks for you.

"Why can't you just do it", they say. I dunno my brain just RefusesTM and I don't understand it either and it sucks! And telling me to do it like I'm back at goddamn high school isn't about to make me do it, Mx. Theoretical Poster Half My Age.

This isn't so much about alt text any more oops I'm just saying I agree with the sentiment here.
