Whenever you post about these things half the time I think "oh yeah I had this exact stumbling block", and the other half I think "wait surely you just--"

who is a string 🙃 (it has to be to support substitutions, really, but the upshot is that i just do not know how to get the Character)
Ohh, you want to get the Character(). o: Okay that's an understandable wrinkle.
I struggled once with implementing a chatlog-style avatar display (side-image or whatever seemed to inconsistently update) such I just added a new argument to Characters, so maybe you need to do something like that.
