... to everyone at Google who lost their job today, and to those who are still waiting to find out. It is an awful thing, and we hope you all find new places quickly and it doesn't disrupt your life horribly. Anyone who needs emotional support or just to talk for any reason, please reach out, we're here. <3

All these recent layoffs need to be understood first and foremost through the lens of capital fighting back against worker power. Tech workers need to get to a point where we are willing to strike for better conditions, and things like more warning before layoffs are a core part of that. We need to learn to fight for each other, or else in ten years' time we will be looking at a drastically different industry, a far less pleasant one to work in.

The future is not written. If we stand together, we can change it.

Have been trying to put together plans to leave Google for months & i think I'll be in a pretty stable place with severance payments and everything, but wow today was still such a shock. Going to be ineptly processing this for a while i think

not sure who wouldn't have found out by now. at least one person i know found out when their badge didn't work this morning. absolutely unreal level of disgusting impersonal bullshit, literally zero warning layoff with no ramp or handoff

i mean we knew they were gonna do it when they announced a 20% cost cut but fucksake

so what happened was that in some countries, especially in Europe, there are laws against firing people without advance warning or cause. so what we have heard is that the company gave people there a notice that they MIGHT be fired at some point in the future, and should stay tuned to find out. this is secondhand though so take it for what it's worth, our understanding might be garbled.

yeah, that's ridiculously messed up, especially after people give years of their lives for the company.
