the reason the american football is called the nfl is probably because of the afl to avoid confusion
idk what came first tho tbh
they still didnt change the abc to the nbc im america though so thats confusing
i think the NFL is just called that bc americans think their nation is the only one in the world. there WAS a gridiron "American Football League" that i believe tried to compete with the NFL in the 60s/70s before being unceremoniously absorbed by the behemoth NFL anyway... sad but it works better for us i suppose!
