uuuuh should i finish (or more realistically, watch a LP of the end of) BotW before i start totk? or do we get a "previously on" or something at the beginning?

In Botw I finished the camera quest, did all the shrines and beasts, then got to hyrule castle and ran out of steam/i have a hard time finishing games with big boss battles/difficult challenges at the end

If you ran out of steam AT Hyrule Castle you may as well finish it, you're super close to the end, and TOTK doesn't recap the first game's ending. That said, it doesn't really need to, TOTK in some ways acts as a soft reboot/remake of BOTW, story-wise.

honestly, there's barely anything you need to know about botw's main quest to enjoy totk. most things i found that contributed to my enjoyment of totk were like...sidequest material. knowing what bolson/hudson/rhondson's deal is, talking to Traysi, rescuing Flaxel, that kinda stuff gets payoffs in totk, but the main quest stuff that you gotta know for TOTK is "the Calamity happened, and L&Z and the Champions put a stop to it. the end."
