i think why i stay so relentlessly positive on Star Trek Discovery, even while acknowledging and agreeing with many criticisms of it is, that i love the characters deeply. they are so so good, the bad guys are fun to hate, and the relationships and banter are compelling. when i hear criticisms of discos plot structure or topics or w/e i can see where ppl are coming from. but anyone who expresses criticism towards the characters1 im like, immediately ready to throw down, you have made an enemy today, etc. that's my Blorbo yr talkin abt.
and to address the bridge-shaped elephant in the room, i think its perfectly fine to have bridge officers on a star trek show who don't get a ton of development. We have plenty of other characters who do have ample development and arcs and are given things to do. Sometimes you just need a character to fly the ship. I love Detmer and Owo and the rest, and it's ok to have characters who are simply recurring presences on a show. Lots of other TV shows do that. IMO Trek fans who need to read a single other book have preconceived expectations around which officers on the ship should be in the main cast of a show, and were mad that Disco didn't follow that pattern.

  1. to be clear, criticizing writers decisions about characters, particularly when those decisions might play into stereotypes or harmful tropes, is not included in that. but people who just irrepresibly hate Michael or Tilly and think they're annoying are immediately suspect to me and I'm low key assuming they have some unexamined biases
