I'm playing with the idea of running an ARG that is specifically for/ about the western mass queer scene, that uses Lex and Queer Exchange, that includes in-person drops and gatherings. As far as topics/story I'm extremely vague at this point but am intrigued by the idea of talking about social dynamics relevant to our community, like Lashon Hara and ostracism and paranoia.
I'm also intrigued at the idea of a social puzzle: NPCs (who would be clearly understood to be NPCs) enact a version of a social situation which often leads to online mob mentalities, and the players have to each individually or collectively decide how to react to it, and the story changes depending on what they decide. I guess thats not so much a puzzle but there are more ideal and less ideal outcomes.
Maybe theres a primary struggle/antagonist in the foreground we are working together to overcome via more usual ARG puzzles, but the results of the social conflicts will affect our ability to or how we go about doing that. If an NPC gets kicked out of the discord, for instance, maybe they post anonymously on Lex something which hinders progress, or maybe you could end up with 2 factions of players, and for the end game to succeed they need to reunite.
Idk, im just spitballing out here. I'm obviously inspired by a lot of stuff @shel has written and talked about over the years I've known them. Would love to hear other ppls ideas or thoughts, or suggested reading or other ARGs to read about. Or if you're also interested in ARGs and want to collab (you don't have to be in Western Mass necessarily) please chime in. I've never made one before and only actually participated in one.
