It was chilly, near zero, and the fog was so thick that you could barely see halfway down the block; a city obliterated by cloudy stillness. The moon shone through as an ethereal, featureless disc, its silver light more penetrating than the diffuse glow of the buildings.

Please pardon the ham-handed post-processing here. My phone was struggling with the lighting conditions, as beautiful as they were to my eye, and so there was a lot of chrominance and luminance noise.
On the flip side, I now have a spreadsheet to generate curves for an arcsinh transform to stretch seriously dark data like this. Supposedly, this better approximates the response of the human eye, and it's what I generally prefer for a first pass at astrophotography images, so maybe I'll try processing a stacked image in RawTherapee some time.
Also, it's taken me this long to come up with the word I meant instead of "obliterated". Effaced!
