it's kind of good and also it kind of sucks. this is true of much of 00 in general but i think the movie is significantly more "sucks" than "good" by volume. there's a particular fansub of it out there (i last rediscovered it on aniwave.to) that makes the entire film literally 10x more enjoyable than it would otherwise be and i am not at all joking about this. every time i've watched this movie i've found myself enjoying it more than the previous watch, but also it feels like its runtime is somehow simultaneously both 10 minutes and 40 hours long, neither of which are in a good way. they sent two protagonists to space for 50 years to talk to some aliens and yet somehow they are still allegedly dropping a 3rd season of the show in 2027.
however. the aliens are very cool. so everything works out.
