started a really ornate crochet afghan in april 2022. in order of increasing nicheness: it's queen size; it's worked in the round in DK yarn; it's the "phoenix" afghan from hooked on sunshine.
here is what rules about afghans worked in one piece:
- every time you pick up the project you enter into a conversation with your past selves. at this point I am finishing a work started by someone very different from me, and revisiting tactile memories across years of time.
- if you are diligent, you cannot fuck it up.
- if you do fuck it up, you will be humbled but not thwarted. frog and begin again
I do crochet smaller things, but big blankets are my favorite. they're more of a practice than a product for me. the practice is about asserting that I exist, engaging with my continuity through time, and showing to myself that I can start and work and finish. I buy all the yarn up front, which is partly practical (dye lot!) and partly an act of faith. and it doesn't matter how many times I pick it up and put it down; it'll still be there til it's finished.
caveat: for structural integrity, it can't be washed until it's done. it's been two years. this thing is huge, beautiful, and kinda stinky
