This is all just conjecture, but my developing theory about why Disney is releasing the originally-planned 'Moana sequel series' as a 'theater-bound Moana sequel' is that Disney is scrambling to regain the audience goodwill it lost after releasing Wish (alongside several ongoing boycotts against the company.) It would explain why there's not even a year between the announcement and the release date.

Disney+ is also struggling to justify its own existence to consumers, just like most current streaming services right now. So streaming-exclusivity is currently where new Disney content goes to shine briefly before dying with a whimper, and some higher-up probably thought a Moana continuation deserved a better shot than that. We might be seeing more of these budget-shows-turned-movies in the upcoming years due to similar decisions. This would parallel the Disney era of direct-to-dvd 'movies' that were actually compilations of TV shows that were cancelled mid-development. If this does occur, we may officially be in another 'dark age' where Disney is actually struggling to maintain itself (by Disney's own corporate standards, at least.)

Yes, I think you’re correct about this. I worked on the Disney account at a vendor until late last year and they are definitely in damage control mode— they laid a bunch of their people off, clamped down heavily on all new productions and were repeatedly requesting cost projections even for very small projects. Most of the companies that ride Disney’s coattails are laying people off now because the money faucet has turned off.

I think it’s finally sinking in that Iger’s strategy of buying up big properties and then cranking out endless spin-offs to stock Disney+ is a financial dead end and has only served to make people sick of these franchises, so they want to retreat to the safety of sequels to films that actually performed. I know Moana is one of their all-time most streamed features, so they’re probably hoping it’ll eventually lure families who saw it in the theater to Disney+, which is hemorrhaging money.

There is also a perception that the rather tacked-on style of social messaging in recent Disney fare is alienating consumers. Disney seems to be under the impression that it’s all messaging, but I don’t think that’s the case. After all, films like Barbie and Nimona did great. People just want to see films where the message is baked into the story organically and not awkwardly shoved into a script after the fact.

I'm happy to receive such a well-thought-out reply. It's nice to have some confirmation that Disney is spinning its wheels now and not just making bad creative decisions just because it feels too big to fail. (Obviously my heart goes out to the employees who bear the brunt of the consequences, it's just also satisfying to see that even Disney executives can't just do whatever without taking a hit.)

Totally. I’ve been praying on their downfall for a while lol, but it’s definitely rough for the whole industry right now because they were so huge that their money kept a lot of other companies afloat.
