For a more episodic venture, I've decided to revisit a childhood show that I've only ever caught in small doses. Here are my thoughts:
-
Rigby is adorable. I love how he skitters around on all fours like a real raccoon several times in the episode. Definitely plushie material.
-
Mordecai in turn is a serviceable dumb half of the dumb-and-dumber dynamic between him and Rigby. Idk if I'm too enthralled with him as a character quite yet, but he does seem to be a necessary counterweight to Rigby's impulsivity.
-
My favorite character so far though has to be Pops. I appreciate his existence in a world of cynically wacky cartoons that try to imitate Regular Show without the sincerity.
-
I love that this just feels like a standard episode and doesn't bother with character introductions or easing the viewer in. It's a strange world with strange characters doing strange things, you either get it or you don't.
-
"Take us to the moon, take us to the moon!" is the only memory I have of this episode from when I was ten.
-
This entire episode is fed into my years-long desire to learn to play synth. Zukunft ahoi! Wie ich mich freu'!
-
My one nitpick is that the logic of the keyboard is really unclear. Rigby needed to be able to see Skips to transport him back to Earth, but he could transport all the other stuff to the moon without seeing them? Just confusing that they contradicted something explicitly stated in dialogue.
-
My one non-serious nitpick is that they managed to teleport to the moon with the golf cart, but when they teleported back the golf cart was left behind. Just kinda weird ig.
Overall, I can see why this show remains a cult classic. Can't wait to see more.
