I think it's way too early to say anything definitive about the quality of the Wild Manes webisodes, without unfairly comparing it to MLP because both brands happen to have horses, but I do really like the character designs. I'm always biased towards big colorful hair on characters, and the proportions resemble actual equines more than MLP G4/G5 ever really did.

The toys look decent too. If Wild Manes was around when I was a kid, I'd really appreciate the properly styled hair and extensive accessories on the dolls. The designs and toys actually remind me more of Horseland than anything else, so I think there's a market niche Wild Manes is intelligently filling rather than simply leeching off MLP's popularity. In my mind, horse toys like Wild Manes' function as proper fashion-play dolls, hence the webisodes sticking to slice-of-life scenarios where the characters don't get roughed up. Meanwhile MLP's toys are more intended to withstand rough play and be easily replaceable upon damage, hence some more fantastical plotlines in its series.

It sits in a good spot toy wise imo. I agree with you that they are different enough to separate it from MLP. The g4 ponies mostly were pretty small, so they didn't allow for a lot of hair play, and the g5 ponies seem even smaller. 1 Sometimes there are bigger ponies, but they aren't regularly released.

I like the Wild Manes for being slightly more realistic while still having a cutesy look. Plus they have enough hair to brush and style. If I see them in stores I might pick up the bakery one (I think her name was Cocoa). Haven't seen the webseries yet though.
I am kinda 👀 to see how they do since they seem more fashion play focused. I would love to see more non human fashion dolls. (Pinkie Cooper,,,,, I miss her so)

  1. I've collected various ponies from G1 thru G4, but I haven't looked at G5 all that much. Idk if all the releases are that small, but the ones I saw were pretty tiny.

The webseries gives off MLP G3 vibes in terms of tone and writing, but it's definitely not a bad thing if you like slice-of-life. There's only two episodes out rn though, so it may be subject to change.

G2 is my favorite style-wise so I'm insanely fond of Wild Manes' style as well. I can also see OOAK makers having fun with the base doll models with more room to go wild with mane styles and body detailing.
