I've only caught a few episodes of Adventure Time as a child because I could only watch CN when visiting a friend's house, so it'll be fun to give it a proper watchthrough. I'll be doing several episodes per post due to their 11-minute runtimes.

1x01 "Slumber Party Panic"

  • A very wild first episode in retrospect. The script spares little time explaining what exactly all these weird characters are or how the world works, expecting the viewer to take it all at face value. And it works.
  • My only source of confusion is the math-based slang words.
  • There are remnants of the flavor of early 2010s 'lol so wacky' humor that I don't really enjoy, but it's overall pretty solid and I expect that to evolve as the show progresses.

1x02 "Trouble in Lumpy Space"

  • I really enjoy the opening
  • I'm noticing the animation is a lot less consistent than what I've seen of later seasons. Characters seem to get bug-eyed at random and it's unusual.
  • Lumpy Space is really pretty to look at. Lumpy Space Princess is funny but grating at points, even though that's intentional. It's not too fun watching someone be seemingly deliberately incompetent and rude, especially when the people they hurt wind up being the ones to apologize for not having infinite patience.

1x03 "Prisoners of Love"

  • I love Tom Kenny's VA work as Ice King. Everything about the Ice Kingdom as a setting is really pleasing to me.
  • Ice King in general is a successfully sympathetic antagonist that's somehow also cartoonishly evil. He's my current favorite. I don't agree with the people that turned him into a Tumblr Sexyman, but I understand.
  • We see some more of Finn's and Jake's brotherly relationship, and I find it remarkably charming. I like that it's absent of outright bullying present in other fictional sibling relationships.

1x04 "Tree Trunks"

  • I love Tree Trunks so much. She reminds me of a lot of grandma figures I know here in Texas, especially with the accent.
  • The snake-armed brain beast is a pretty baller monster design.

1x05 "The Enchiridion"

  • This is where I feel it's suitable to say I love the synth tracks in this show.
  • Key-per is adorable and I vibe with his infodumping.
  • The 'destroying old ladies' scene really shows how much weight the words 'kill' and 'die' have in kids' cartoons.
  • I hope we see more of the Enchiridion. Not a lot was done with it here.

1x06 "The Jiggler"

  • The Jiggler is a weirdly compelling design. I love how inorganic it looks.
  • I know I'm just a bit sensitive, but I dislike episodes where an animal or animal-equivalent is just suffering for most of the runtime.

1x07 "Ricardio the Heart Guy"

  • First off: amazing character name. Wonderful design too.
  • The plot twist is awesome. I love Ice King even more now.

It's impressive how fast this whole show feels normal despite never slowing down. I will continue watching another day.
