The Orville isn't a political masterpiece of a show, but it does manage to write its Space Nazis™ better than most American space operas write their Space Nazis™
- Acknowledging religious fanaticism as a root of fascism
- Straight up confirming they are Space Nazis by having a member root for the Earth Nazis From Real Life™
- Not shying away from obvious parallels to US imperialism and exceptionalist ideology so that the target audience can't safely file them away as an 'other.'
- Overall humanizing the group so that they are more narratively compelling than unfeeling bullet fodder for the Good Guy Protags
- By extension, introducing a morally very-dark-grey member where it is easy to understand where she is coming from, while still making it clear the direction she's going in is still abhorrent.
- The show doing all of this without ideologically proclaiming that the Space Nazis can be defeated by simply hugging it out and having a lot of peace talks.
