"now" is an illusion. we all make sense of things only after the fact. and if you like, you may hijack that, and use it to tell your own stories about your life, instead of the ones you instinctively reach for to explain your own actions

my roommate was telling me once, about why, when a disaster occurs, responders always seek the responses of children.

an adult will try to make sense of what happened— they'll explain the conclusions they're drawing, whatever they assumed was going on, whatever story they put together in their head as it was happening. But children will just Tell You What They Experienced. They'll give you the raw details of it, and often that's a lot more useful, it turns out. Adults' speculations can be wildly off base!

I also think about this in terms of the narratives I have for my feelings. The feelings, bare, make no fucking sense to me, and could be analyzed in any number of different ways. I try to choose some imperfect narrative for them to have some notion of feeling like I might understand myself, but at the end of the day I don't really feel any closer to that understanding. So maybe we need to analyze feelings less and feel them more.

according to a nanofiction we once read

is the story of how we've changed the ways we tell the story of our life, over the course of our life

we find it to be a very powerful notion
