i hate how so many language learning resources assume the only reason someone may have to learn a language is to become fluent and travel

it is actually perfectly reasonable to go study a language with no expectation or desire to become fluent, no ability or desire to go to the country its spoken, no desire to speak it with people, but rather with just the goal of attaining a passing familiarity, the ability to glean some information from text, or sorta understand media in the language, and not even WANT to devote the time to becoming "fluent", a term that, imo, is kinda a false binary anyways.

ppl shouldnt be made to feel like language learning is an all or nothing thing

I feel like there's a couple "thresholds" u do need to pass when u learn a language, and if u don'f pass themf u're liable to lose skill vee quickly over time, andf "fluent" is one of them, but I don'f think it's the only one.

Fur example, I am not fluent in spanish, I can'f speak it at all and I can't listen to someone speaking it vee well in real time, but I can understandf like mosf of it given enough time, even if I haven't practiced in months.

I think that if there were more resources thaf instead of focusing on trying to teach large amounfs of information, they instead helped people to retain core amounfs of information littel by littel and vee gradually, it would bee a lot more helpful, even to people trying to become fluent, hehe.
