what if social media but it had a regulatory mechanism for making sure your timeline stayed manageable and not too noisy and filled with people you cared about
like what if we took the cursed Algorithm and reimagined what it could look like if it was aligned with the goals of the user instead of aligned with a profit motive. after all tools are just tools not good nor bad
i mean yeah you could write that into an edit of mastodon if you wanted (well like, not you specifically, nor me probably, but it could be done is what i mean there are mastodon hackers out there who would understand)
question is: what algorithm would you use? And i think that's a tricky question to answer
i think maybe it would be cool if you could paste in an algorithm as like lua code or something kinda like that, on the web page. like a userscript for your feed. and then over time as individuals tinkered with that they could figure out algorithms that did things they liked and share them around. and maybe some of the best ones could get added in as default options
