category theory is so absurdly powerful, you can take basically anything you understand in one field of math, figure out what it's called in category theory, and ask what it looks like in other fields of math, and suddenly you have new toys to play with, new connections. you can make interesting things out of thin air if you know enough math and a little bit of category theory. it's so fucking fun

it is also a serious headache sometimes, fair warning. but if you know enough about math it will allow you to ask new questions you probably couldn't even conceive of before
case in point im currently asking a question about... how to find whether two given different sets of word-reduction rules will lead to some strings reducing in the same way, because i needed a toy example to understand equalizers better and it seemed like an easy way to quickly construct interesting morphisms would be to use a free group.
