I know nobody here needs to hear this, but

do not use an app from some hip yet relatable yet mysterious corporation called something like TheyThems or YouForYa to track your "gender journey"

pervocracy
@pervocracy

in addition to the obvious security risks, these apps tend to promote a weird as hell view of gender and transness

please do not give me a checklist of ways to be more masculine

please do not ask me how masculine I feel today

even couched in lots of "you do YOU" language it still always comes off super essentialist to the point where I'm like, are you people aware women are allowed to wear pants these days

transness is this complicated negotiation between the demands of society at large, the influences of communities and subcommunities and personal relationships, and the inscrutable exhortations of the soul

and I don't think even kids or newcomers benefit from trying to simplify that down to "trans is when you just know you're meant for blue and not pink"

these complaints are more subjective than the security concern or the wisdom of monetizing queerness, so I'm putting them in a separate post, but rrrrrgh I hate the whole mindset implied by these things

I'll be real I literally just started HRT like yesterday and ngl I was thinking about how I wouldn't mind an app just to like, keep track of things and set goals I guess, but honestly if these are the only options available then it's a hard pass

It took me so long to realize that the blobby gradient background is what that last image is referring to when it says “this is what your unique sense of self looks like today” lolllllll

Is this app just an emotion tracker but with like. Gay emotions? Much like @hillbillyinablimp I’ve also thought about finding use in a gendery app but this looks like such a nothingburger of uselessness (am I morbidly curious enough to download it and report back with findings? probably not)

I downloaded it and made an account with a 10minutemail email/fake personal info and wow you really can’t access ANYTHING without paying $15/month!! https://youtu.be/bunvJEJTwlY?si=mLlN4eqtR75PNVq3 I meant to have a voiceover but apparently I do not record my screen often enough to know you have to turn that on.

With the subscription there’s an emotion/journal section, an outfit tracking section, the autostraddle plus crosswords, and discounts on the store. Again. $15/month. Significantly less if you go quarterly or annually!

I think their goal is for the location to be used for their “binary breaking IRL and URL events, spanning all areas of queer life-from genderless guided self-pleasure webinars to in-person drag shows and queer speed dating” (just use Lex. Or Facebook or anything else) I think you could get all of these features with free/cheaper apps that also have more clear privacy protections.

Further critiques:
-I could only pick a location in the United States/there wasn’t a place to change it later.
-I should’ve tested it to see if you could pick a state without picking a city because that seems like a bit of a fuck you to rural users.
-I don’t think you can put in custom pronouns?
-I have questions about the PDF journal export
-Have to choose between affirming/celebrating/understanding myself
