every american election year half the internet becomes basically unusable for me under a tide of deafening, extremely toxic, immensely loud American Politics Screaming And Yelling but usually it has the decency to at least wait until the midpoint of the year to get this bad

Can you imagine how we feel?

I really hate how “loud” the U.S. is on the world stage. It’s like what happens here is the only thing that matters in the world. That a primary election in New Hampshire somehow eclipses the national politics of half the world. It’s something Canada more than any other country has to put up with, but even in as far a way a place as Madagascar people are watching.

Then again, we (aka the Americans who care about anything outside the US) watch the elections happening in other countries. The UK and EU especially.

The worst part is that North Americans get close to zero news about the outside world. No news from Europe, West Asia, East Asia, Africa, Australia, South America, nowhere. It's ridiculous that we have such a one-way-mirror news system, unless said news is so crazy big (like the genocide of tens of thousands of Palestinians, warped into "Israel does some mildly naughty things to save themselves from terrorists!" by mainstream American news.)

This results in, effectively, a circle-jerk where no American really knows what's happening outside of America. All we have to talk about, forever, are our politics - our problems - and we get very, very loud about them, mainly because we don't really have much else to talk about or learn about. And we leave inter-country affairs to the government, because apparently we don't get a say in those. Great!

(Edit, from the heart rather than informed speech: All this is just to say that we have to go far out of our way to find out about global affairs. There's not even any news like that passively spreading through internet culture. We should be talking about all the great things people are working towards every day, not just clambering over each other to say things that have been said by thousands of other people and drowning out anything else.)
