If you see this maybe try reading their posts. I've been aware of them for a while because they linked a thread I made at some point. They're interested in online communities and moderation and analyzing community building, and they don't only ever post about cohost. They're really even handed and try to source everything they can. They're a whole lot nicer to cohost than I am lmao. But I think a bunch of people calling this person a loser or w/e is a lot worse than anything they've posted.

It's a viable comeback in this scenario cause these people's hobbies usually are just getting mad at shit on the internet and picking fights with people. I know these sorts all too well from my time adminning on mastodon... because even when the conversation is important (here, race issues) the way it's handled ensures nothing valuable will come from it.

As someone that has used Pillowfort and saw the said post, I was already getting a bit antsy reading it again. I'll definitely keep an eye out on them. Regardless of their intentions, the way the posts are executed seem to come off as a bit of a pot stirrer... 🤔

I think what I dislike most about this is that they seem to pretty much only post about drama while presenting themselves as some sort of documentatian of cohost. from reading their posts the general impression is of a website that is continually at war with itself and nobody ever has fun rather than one where disagreements flare up occasionally on account of it being a website where posting happens. Additionally, I'm not sure you really need to be comprehensively hate-reading a website for data in order to say vagueposting can be bad

Cohost has issues but I can assure that Pillowfort has 100% of the same problems and maybe they should focus on solving the problems on their own platform instead... Every social media needs to have a discussion amongst their own about how it treats or alienates POC but the PF post feels like they are just foisting that discussion on another platform like theirs isn't guilty itself. I guarantee their site also has a white majority that isn't even remotely welcoming to POC, so like... glass houses and whatnot.

That's so interesting! First because it reminds me off how different people's feeds are in here.
But also because this Osteophage seems to be a little obsessed with correlating things. They keep mentioning "vagueposting" and "vagueblogging" and it sounded very weird to me. I mean that vagueposting looks like just a symptom of not being chronically online.
It can be that the meaning of "vagueposting" is lost on me due to language differences, but it seems so primal to watching or reading anything at all that in any social website everything can be characterized as "vague".
It's how people work, no one needs to know the full context to everything all of the time.
It looks like their aversion to letting things be vague leads them to constantly be trying to create conflicts and a bigger drama between loose posts.
But of course, that's just what it looks like to me.

idk, while i agree that the post you linked comes off that way, it seems like they also have interesting things to say about cohost’s design and culture that we could learn from, e.g. https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/3925854

for example, in one of their other “compilations” they talked about how, in practice and intentions aside, our comments system actually discourages commenting, which in turn makes conversations disjoint and prone to not hearing each other because people prefer adding their comments in reposts.

this is not limited to cohost either, they also talk about their experiences with livejournal, dreamwidth, wordpress, tumblr, and pillowfort itself: https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/312460

i guess what i’m saying is that they may just have an interest in analysing the dynamics of different platforms, and that talking about it elsewhere isn’t necessarily malicious.

i do not really disagree with you

i have made a lot of my own critiques of cohost, quite intense ones at points, the lack of context is real and the strong discouragement of comments too

i read some of osteophage's posts in 2022 and early 2023 while i was in that mode, the aloof perspective troubled me, but it is a valid literary technique

ironically it was the comments on their posts that convinced me to focus on cohost instead of pillowfort - it just did not feel comfy to me, it was very tribal and vitriolic (i am sadly getting some of that us/them vibe in these comments as well)

also, it is clear to me that while they may have reserved their name on cohost they are actively using it via other page names, so blocking that page will not be anything more than a data point in their future post on how a few cohosties decided to mass block them for their investigations 🤷

The structural analysis isn't wildly offbase but by the same token it is impossible for someone who spends this much time ferreting out and documenting the social dynamics of little online subculture groups to be unaware of the basic deal of running a drama-farming offsite to keep tabs on your favorite lolcows in 2024

Not a whole lot of nonmalicious success stories to point to, there

whoa! they put me in the dark mode one! weird weird weird. I do love that their takeaway was “I can’t follow what y’all are talking about” as if my goal was to provide clarity for some external observer and not processing my own thoughts.

  1. Pillowfort? Really? Site is so broken I had to find a workaround just to scroll down and read the post

  2. I think it really says something about Cohost that their “drama post” that’s trying to be entertaining actually just feels like a pretty dry description of mostly reasonable people having a somewhat confusing conversation due to the medium. Like nobody at any point is actually inflammatory or says anything particularly outrageous. Meltdown May this is not.

And yeah the vague posting on this site sucks and that's why I said fuck it I'm replying to the thing I'm replying to so it's actually clear what the fuck anyone is talking about.
