there's too many thoughts to put in here but all i can say is this shit is exactly why i have made such a big deal about the financial updates

we already had one point in time where they were two or three weeks away from not being able to make payroll and they acted like this wasn't a crisis

now they're two or three weeks from not making payroll AND don't know where their investor is, and they're still acting like it's not a total emergency. business as usual for now.

even if they started breaking even today, they spent what, two years with zero revenue, and then operated cohost at a loss...the amount of money they have to pay back is insurmountable.

and it bothers me because so many very nice people set up shop here and felt like there was plenty of hope for this to be a long term home for them because they made sure that it sounded like everything was fine, don't worry everyone, please don't look too hard at our numbers, some of which are still missing in this update actually, please do NOT think about the fact that it's tax season

i may be a hater but i'm a hater of this exact thing, i'm a hater of stringing people along like this when you knew full well what was going on behind the scenes, you knew your funder was MIA for a while now, heck you know right now that you're about to not make payroll and you want to go on business as usual instead of working on those export tools you thought might be nice for people. i'm not a hater of regular people who put their faith in these folks though, and that's when i become a Sadder.

i can't stress enough how much debt they have though, there's a lot of people really campaigning to do extra subscriptions or whatever but your $5 is not going to do much for the hundreds of thousands (possibly in the millions at this point???) in debt they owe to a person who has disappeared now

they have to pay that back, is the thing. they've been taking loans for...if their website is to be trusted four years now. that's a lot of money. throwing a bunch of five dollar bills at them doesn't help. their own replies to people makes it pretty clear that they know it doesn't help.

in reply to @lori's post:

they basically, intentionally or not, duped their rich friend into paying them extravagantly cushy wages to dick around for four years. what they did with all that money, i have no idea. sure hope they saved some!

Now we have to have a bunch of thoughts like...

Boy, there's a LOT of laws involved in handling people's data, selling it, not selling it, deleting it, etc. There's a LOT that goes into defaulting on loans too. This is going to be a nightmare for a very long time no matter what happens to cohost in a few weeks. If the benefactor is okay, there's going to be a ton of issues with who gets what in the divorcedefault, there's a lot that goes into what is considered user data and what isn't, what is considered IP and what isn't, it's not an easy thing to sort out. I don't know that I trust them to actually be 100% confident in how this plays out. If the benefactor isn't okay...someone else might end up holding the keys to all of this, and they might not feel the same way as the benefactor about it. They may want to get paid, like yesterday.
