i'll probably expand on this further once i'm home but i really gotta let out a bit of frustration
it's fine to be critical of certain things, especially when the flaws are quite apparent. but there eventually gets a point when it feels less like being critical because you want a thing to be better and more like you want to be critical because it's what got your channel popular and now you have to milk it until the cow runs dry.
that's how i feel about a particular creator in the gran turismo community, especially in light of GT7's spec ii update.
okay, so i don't exactly have the energy to really elaborate on this further now that i'm home. but fuck it, let's try anyway. probably gonna throw this under a read more section so it doesn't clog up your feeds.
so basically, continuing off the post from earlier, i'm not exactly the biggest fan of a recent gran turismo youtuber - roflwaffle.
famous, or infamous, depending on who you ask, for making a bunch of critique videos on gran turismo 7 - which, fair enough, especially considering the state of the game at the time he made them. but for some reason i could never really jive with his content.
like, it's fair to criticize gran turismo 7 for the state it was in throughout the last couple years. it's not a perfect game by any means. hell, i was guilty of it for a while; but i felt like i was critical because i wanted to see the game improve at the end of the day. but to me, rofl feels like his videos have a sense of vitriol and condescension to them. as i mentioned earlier it feels to me less like they want the game to improve and they're more interested in being so critical of the game out of bad faith because it's what got their channel popular to begin with and they found their audience from the gran turismo subreddit and gtplanet forums which is where a huge chunk of the hatedom for gt7 came from and he wants to capitalize on that.
he also seems very condescending from what i can tell; a mutual on another platform did tell me he responded to a bunch of criticisms of his gt7 videos but did so by oversimplifying a bunch of the arguments in a reductive way. a lot of his thumbnails and video titles also feel like they're talking down to the viewer and especially ones who do still like the game and have something positive to say about the game. his most recent video on the spec ii update is what drove me to write this whole post to begin with:
like... this seriously rubs me the wrong fucking way. the general consensus is that the spec ii update is one of the best updates that gran turismo 7 brought out across its entire post-launch lifespan; content-wise the cars and track selection was really good, world circuits saw a significant re-tooling with event directory helping make the career feel more cohesive, gt sophy now being a permanent addition is a huge W, weekly challenges does help out the endgame significantly by rewarding players for revisiting existing events as well as pretty much being home to seasonals like the 992 gt3 rs one-make from the first week of the update being out. one of the biggest, most appreciated changes as well is that quick and custom race payouts are heavily boosted by increasing your collector level and mastering the circuit experience for each track by 200% each, giving a 400% increase in total, and that's done wonders for people who just want to do their own races, whether it be people running rings around heavily nerfed tomahawks in engine swapped shitboxes or doing custom grids with a multitude of different themes (i know that's what i've been doing!), which pretty much means after you've exhausted the career mode, you can just keep the momentum doing and actually make your own fun with the game.
yes, there's still some other things that they could fix with the game that spec ii didn't touch on. the career could very much still use some more events that utilize more of the car list and the boosted payouts still don't apply to multiplayer, but what they have given us with this update was hugely appreciated and really got people interested in the game again, especially me, since i used to be highly critical of the game myself. but this video feels like it's scolding people for enjoying the update and singing its praises. it definitely could've been worded better; perhaps by saying something more like "spec ii isn't perfect, but we're on the right track" would've given the right impression, but this comes off to me a lot more as rofl essentially yelling "QUIT HAVING FUN!!!" if anything.
i think that's the end of my rant, but basically, i'm not a fan of roflwaffle at all. it's clear he'll continue to whinge and moan about gran turismo 7 because he's cultivated an audience that pretty much hates the game just as much as he does and the way he does it comes of like he's coming from a place of malice. he also just comes off as a complete douchebag to anyone who isn't part of his target audience and quite frankly, i don't fuck with that.
