i don't know if gen z realizes the extent to which doing a heel turn on barney was a universal coming-of-age expectation around first grade in the 90s. everyone i knew memorized a jingle about murdering barney as a rite of passage to prove that they had outgrown the age of youthful sentimentality. one of the earliest ways i was taught to reject sincerity in favor of performative cynicism.
