AI is the most overhyped fucking thing on the planet right now. it's not even AI. it's a string generator. but you have all this breathless reporting on it.

in the last few days, we've had elon musk and netanyahu at a roundtable talking about how to restrain the "dangers" of AI. Then Elon talking about his neuralink chip, saying it will improve "human to AI broadband" (???) in order to mediate the risks of AI takeover by, I assume, becoming more like them (insane things to say)

THE ACTUAL DANGERS OF AI...

the actual dangers of AI are far less exciting than a robot uprising and look a lot more like the spread of misinformation, and plaigarism. A great example is this google card that showed up if you googled the tianenmen square tank man, which shows an AI-generated selfie as the first result. (this has since been corrected)

...AND WHO'S RESPONSIBLE

fake images have of course been around for a long time... photoshop has been fooling people for decades. and yet, why was this not a problem until now? well, it's kind of less the fault of AI and more the fault of companies like, well, Google, mentioned above, and Twitter under its new management who have recently automated their algorithms to just show any unfiltered information and treat it like it's true.

google put that result there (as you can see by the "reddit" credit in the corner) because it had a lot of views. not because it was from a reliable source

the SEO-isation of AI images is a result of just the general enshittification infecting the whole internet right now. and honestly, it wasn't great even when it only had photoshop to contend with. misinformation's just always been a problem
